MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After shooting 5-under-par to earn a share of the individual title at the ECU Intercollegiate in Greenville, North Carolina, freshman Max Green of the West Virginia University golf team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
 
Green shot 69-69-73=211 on the par 72 Brook Valley Country Club course, making him one of just four golfers in the field to shoot under par in the 54-hole event.  The Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, native became the third WVU golfer to win a collegiate tournament, joining teammate Mark Goetz and former Mountaineer Max Sear.
 
This Week in Baseball: West Virginia plays four games, all of them on the road … on Tuesday, March 29, WVU travels to take on Marshall at the Kennedy Center YMCA in Huntington … first pitch is set for 3 p.m. ET … from there, the Mountaineers open Big 12 Conference play with a three-game trip at TCU, from April 1-3, at Lupton Baseball Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas … Friday’s series opener is set for 7 p.m., while Saturday and Sunday’s games commence at 3 p.m., and 1 p.m., respectively.
 
Last Week in Baseball: The Mountaineers (13-8) earned a three-game sweep over Youngstown State from March 24-25, in Morgantown … WVU topped YSU, 6-4, in the series opener, before it took both games of a doubleheader on March 25, 9-3, and 13-2 … freshman infielder JJ Wetherholt led the way with four hits, six runs, a double, a home run, five RBI and four stolen bases in the series … additionally, freshman infielder Grant Hussey hit a pair of two-run homers in Game 1 of the doubleheader and finished with a team-high six RBI for the weekend … on the mound, fifth-year senior right-hander Zach Bravo, junior right-hander Jacob Watters and sophomore left-hander Ben Hampton all secured wins in the series … Hampton recorded his fourth consecutive quality start on March 25, logging 7.0 innings, while allowing just two runs with five strikeouts … Watters pitched five, no-hit innings against the Penguins in Game 2 of the doubleheader, finishing with five strikeouts … as a team, the Mountaineers stole 12 bases in the series, including 11 in the finale … in the series opener, junior outfielder Victor Scott II broke a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the seventh by stealing home, scoring the go-ahead run.
 
Notes: Following the sweep over Youngstown State, WVU is now 6-1 at home this season … the squad also has won eight straight games over the Penguins, dating back to 2013 … WVU is 50-25 all-time against Marshall, including wins in 10 of the last 11 meetings … the two Mountain State schools were scheduled to meet on March 22, in Morgantown, but the game was postponed due to non-COVID-related illness within the Thundering Herd program … the game will be made up on April 6, at Wagener Field at Monongalia County Ballpark … the Mountaineers are 6-23 in 29 meetings against TCU … overall, the squad is 85-103 in Big 12 games since joining the league in 2013 … West Virginia has stolen 79 bases in 21 games, good for 3.76 per game … following Hussey’s two-homer day against YSU, he now leads the team with six big flies and 19 RBI this season … sophomore catcher McGwire Holbrook continues to lead the club with a .333 average at the plate … senior outfielder Austin Davis made his 100th career start in the series opener against YSU … Hampton has 39 strikeouts in 37.0 innings of work this season, both good for No. 1 on the team … Bravo’s win marked the first of his WVU career … fifth-year senior right-hander Trey Braithwaite earned the save on Thursday, his first as a Mountaineer.
 
This Week in Gymnastics: WVU prepares to open competition at the 2022 NCAA Norman Regional, when it competes against Arizona in the play-in round on Wednesday, March 30 … competition is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET, inside the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman, Oklahoma … the winner of Wednesday’s dual meet will advance to the Second Round on Thursday, March 31, at 8 p.m.

Notes: West Virginia’s NCAA bid marks its 42nd regional championships berth, the 37th in NCAA competition, and the team’s seventh consecutive qualification … the Mountaineers have advanced to the NCAA National Championships three times (1995, 1999, 2000) since 1983 … WVU tallied a 196.650 team total to finish in third place at the 2022 Big 12 Championship in Denver, Colorado, on March 19 … the score marked its highest team total at the Big 12 Championship in program history, besting its previous program-best of 196.375, recorded in 2014 … the Mountaineers earned the squad’s highest finish at the conference meet since 2017, when it also finished third … additionally, WVU’s 196.650 total also was the 11th-best team score in program history, marking the Mountaineers’ highest meet total since 2018 … senior Rachel Hornung became the first Mountaineer to be named to the All-Championship Team since 2017, as well as the first to earn the honors on the all-around since 2015 … West Virginia sits in a tie for No. 19 on floor exercise in this week’s Road to Nationals rankings, with a 49.345 National Qualifying Score (NQS) on the event  … the squad ranks No. 41 on vault (49.005 NQS), No. 38 on uneven bars (49.055 NQS) and No. 36 on beam (49.060 NQS) … individually, senior Kendra Combs is tied for No. 44 nationally on floor with a season NQS of 9.910.  
 
This Week in Tennis: The Mountaineers travel to Kansas for a pair of Big 12 dual matches … the road swing begins in Lawrence, as WVU is set to play No. 25 Kansas on Friday, April 1 … first serve is set for 6 p.m. ET, at the Jayhawk Tennis Center … following competition against the Jayhawks, West Virginia wraps up its weekend with a matchup against No. 56 Kansas State on Sunday, April 3, in Manhattan … first serve against the Wildcats is set for 3 p.m., at the Mike Goss Tennis Stadium.
 
Last Week in Tennis: West Virginia (7-11, 0-4 Big 12) traveled to Texas for its first Big 12 road trip of the season, with matchups against No. 75 TCU and No. 34 Texas Tech … the Mountaineers went 0-2 on the weekend, begining in Fort Worth with a 5-2 loss against the Horned Frogs, on March 25 … WVU fell behind, 1-0, in doubles play … the No. 42-ranked pair of freshman Camilla Bossi and junior Ting-Pei Chang claimed the squad’s solo victory during doubles play, topping Aleksa Cveticanin/Alisa Soloveva, 6-1… in singles, sophomore Momoko Nagato suffered the Mountaineers’ first loss to Jade Otway, 4-6, 6-1, before Bossi put West Virginia on the board with a 6-4, 6-1, victory over Helena Marmont … keeping WVU alive, freshman Tatiana Lipatova defeated Isabel Pascual, 6-4, 6-2, notching WVU’s last singles point against TCU … senior Anastasiia Bovolskaia fell to Mercedes Aristegui, 7-5, 6-1, to give the Horned Frogs the victory … during the matchup against TTU, West Virginia fell behind, 1-0, after the Lady Raiders claimed the doubles point … in singles, Texas Tech went on a 3-0 run to claim the match … Lipatova fell to Matka Komac, 6-0, 6-0, to give the first singles win to TTU … Nagato fell to No. 85 Avelina Sayfetdinova, 6-2, 6-1, before No. 24 Margarita Skriabina defeated Bovolskaia, 6-1, 6-2 … Chang, Bossi and senior Penny Hsieh’s matches all went unfinished.
 
Notes: Friday’s contest marks the eighth time the Mountaineers willl play Kansas since joining the Big 12 in 2012-13, while it will be the 12th matchup against Kansas State … West Virginia is seeking its first win against both Big 12 opponents … Bossi currently leads the team with a 13-3 overall record … as a pair, Bossi and Chang have a doubles record of 9-3 and were ranked No. 42 on the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s (ITA) weekly rankings on March 23 … of note, this is the first time in program history WVU has placed a doubles pair on ITA’s weekly rankings … following their weekend in Texas, the Mountaineers are back home to close out their 2022 spring home slate with a pair of dual matches … WVU will play host to No. 11 Oklahoma State, on Friday, April 8, at 5 p.m. ET and No. 3 Oklahoma on Sunday, April 10, at 11 a.m.
 
This Week in Golf: The Mountaineers will wrap up competition at The Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate in Awendaw, South Carolina, on March 28-29 … WVU will travel to Nashville, Tennessee, on April 1-2, to compete in the Mason Rudolph Championship … three WVU golfers – sophomores Olivier Ménard and Will Stakel and freshman Todd Duncan – will compete as individuals at the Butler Spring Invitational in Indianapolis, Indiana, on March 28-29 … the 36-hole tournament will be played at the par 70 Highland Country Club.

This Week in Track and Field: West Virginia returns home to host the Mountaineer Classic in Morgantown, at the Track and Field Complex at Mylan Park, from April 1-2 … Friday’s action will consist of the hammer throw competition starting at 10:30 a.m. ET … Saturday’s field events are tabbed for 12 p.m., followed by track events at 2 p.m. 
 
Last Week in Track and Field: The Mountaineers completed action at the Raleigh Relays on March 24-26, at the Paul Derr Track and Field Facility, in Raleigh, North Carolina … on Saturday, sophomore Jo-Lauren Keane placed fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:06.58 … the meet began on Thursday, when redshirt sophomore Sarah Stair, sophomore Lynsie Curtis, redshirt senior Ellie Gardner and junior Katelyn Caccamo competed in the pole vault competition … Stair placed fifth overall with a height of 3.60-meters … on Friday, sophomore Abigale Mullings competed in the high jump competition, while senior Katherine Dowie ran in the 5,000-meter race … Dowie ran a personal best, finishing in 16:47.54 … on the final day in Raleigh, five Mountaineers saw action in three events … senior Peter-Gay McKenzie was the loan Mountaineer in the long jump competition … sophomore Cassandra Williamson ran a personal best, placing ninth in the 800-meter run (2:08.38) … redshirt senior Hayley Jackson also saw action in the 800-meter run … senior Tessa Constantine closed out the meet for the Mountaineers in the 400-meter hurdle competition. 
 
Notes: Keane’s time in the 800-meter moved her up to fourth all-time in outdoor program history … she follows Jennifer Kemp (2:05.09-2003), Keri Bland (2:05.63-2010) and Raeleen Hunter (2:06.09-2007) … Williamson opened the outdoor season with a personal best time in the 800-meter … the Mountaineer Classic marks the second of five outdoor home meets for the Mountaineers this spring.
 
This Week in Swimming: The Mountaineers have completed the 2021-22 season.
 
Last Week in Swimming: Fifth-year swimmer David Dixon and senior diver PJ Lenz represented WVU at the 2022 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships, from March 23-26, at the McAuley Aquatic Center, hosted by Georgia Tech, in Atlanta … Dixon competed in the 200-yard butterfly (28th – 1:43.22), 100 fly (40th – 46.83) and the 200 individual medley (52nd – 1:45.47) … in the diving well, Lenz competed on the 1-meter springboard (40th – 267.85) and on platform (30th – 295.15).
 
Notes: Dixon earned his fifth-consecutive bid to NCAAs, making him the first Mountaineer in program history to do so … Lenz represented WVU for the second time in his collegiate career.
